Iridescence

Inspired by theories of hypernormality and narcissism, Iridescence is a comment on 21st century society and aims to realise social media as a tangible real world object. Using bright colours and soft glows, I have created a group of images portraying an ethereal, dream like world where social media is physically real. In this world our edits are how we exist and our stories are how we live our day to day lives. Fascinated by social media as a human construct I began by exploring why we use social media, and why share the content we do. I quickly noticed the vast majority of users share the best aspects of their lives, whether these be physical in angles of a selfie or by sharing the activities they take part in day to day; from photographs of food to outings and events. At the top of this world are the social media influencers, the 21st century celebrity. No longer are the social elite hidden away to be speculated over and seen at major public events as were the glamorous film stars of the 1950s, but instead every aspect of their lives is shared. I wanted to capture how saturated social media is with seemingly similar content as well as how ideas of societal trends and standards are projected at users in a world where we are addicted to the screens that fit in our pockets, preferring to interact digitally rather than physically in person - taking quite literally a global pandemic for our real world society to realise how broken it is.
